The New Westminster Salmonbellies found some nuggets with their late-round picks at the Western Lacrosse Association draft on Monday.

The New Westminster Salmonbellies found some nuggets with their late-round picks at the Western Lacrosse Association draft on Monday.

Drafting 21st overall with its first pick of the draft, New West selected Delta junior Michael Berekoff in the third round.

In the fourth and fifth rounds, the Salmonbellies got New West juniors Mark Negrin, Jeff Sproule and goalie Brandon Mulligan, while picking up Kyle Robinson from Victoria in return for their fifth-round pick in 2013.

Coquitlam all-rounder Travis Cornwall was the first overall pick of the senior Adanacs.

The Burnaby Lakers chose Jackson Decker and Victoria's Casey Jackson from Coquitlam with the next two picks.

Junior Salmonbellie captain Travis Irving was taken first in the second round by Coquitlam.

New West teammate Justin Salt went 10th overall to the Burnaby Lakers.

Daniel Amesbury was a somewhat surprise pick of the Maple Ridge Burrards with the 11th overall pick.

Salmonbellie juniors taken in the third round included Matt MacGrotty and Leif Mydske to Langley.

"We're happy," said New Westminster head coach Ken Thomas. "Like everything, every team sees things a little differently. But we're happy with what was left."

What was left was a Salmonbellie bounty following an arguably curious second and third rounds.

The 6-1 Berekoff was an 80-goal man in his three seasons with the junior Islanders.

Daniel McQuade, the first pick of the fourth round to Coquitlam, had a career-high 99 points in 2011, including 60 regular-season assists, third best in the league last season.

T.J. Cowx went 24th overall to the Burnaby Lakers, followed by Negrin at 28th. Negrin is a proven stickman with back-to-back 34-goal seasons in 2010 and '11.

Jordan Catton, a key faceoff man, also went to the Adanacs with the first pick of the fifth round.

The versatile Sproule and competent play of Robinson could also prove valuable assests for the senior 'Bellies early in the season and beyond, said Thomas.

Mulligan played one game up with the senior 'Bellies last season and sported a 0.794 save percentage in a 14-14 tie with Nanaimo.

Mydske had to be one of the happiest players in the draft after he was taken by the Langley Thunder, a team on which his older brother Brett plays.

"I'm happy for sure - very happy," said Leif. "You want to get picked sooner than later, ... but I know a lot guys on Langley. I'm very happy."

Scott MacDonald from Port Moody junior B and Eric Tuura from the Jr. B Salmonbellies were also drafted by the senior club.

Patrick Spencer went in the eighth round to the Adanacs.

Other first-round selections were David Joyce of Coquitlam taken fourth by Maple Ridge and Ontario superstar Mark Matthews drafted fifth by Langley.

Victoria and Nanaimo picked to form with the sixth and seventh selections, taking locals Karsen Leung and Cody Bremner.
