The annual Seat for Soldiers military appreciation night will be held on Thursday, July 3.
It is the sixth straight year that the New Westminster Salmonbellies senior lacrosse club and the Royal Westminster Regiment have teamed up to bring a special night of lacrosse and support for Canada’s armed forces to Queen’s Park.
“Building on the success of the past five years, our military salute evening features an exciting battle between longtime Western Lacrosse Association rivals,” said senior Salmonbellies director and Seat for Soldiers co-chair David MacGrotty in a media release.
New West will take on the Coquitlam Adanacs at Queen’s Park Arena next Thursday at 7:45 p.m.
All serving and past military, veterans, cadets, legion members, military association members and their families are invited to take in a free evening of lacrosse.
Military guests are asked to dress in uniform or Legion or regimental blazers, while civilians are encouraged to wear red in support of Canada’s troops.
“This is an incredible way to show our Canadian patriotism and honour our serving and past military,” said Karen Baker-MacGrotty, honorary colonel of the Royal Westminster Regiment and co-chair of the event.
Baker-MacGrotty added the close connection between the lacrosse club and the Westies “is extremely meaningful as the Salmonbellies mark their 125th anniversary.
The Westies newly appointed commanding officer Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Vernon will perform the ceremonial faceoff.
Pregame activities begin at 6 p.m. with a military display, featuring vehicles, equipment and kit, a barbecue and beverage garden.
The regimental marching band will entertain the crowd between periods. There will also be giveaways and fun activities.
“I am glad to have this opportunity to publically thank the Salmonbellies for their continued support to the Canadian Armed Forces members and their families,” said Vernon. “For six years now, the Salmonbellies have kindly hosted us and provided an opportunity for members of the community to talk to and get to know our soldiers. I also want to congratulate the Salmonbellies on their 125th anniversary.”
