New Westminster’s Nina Schultz added seven centimetres to her indoor high jump personal best, clearing 1.75m at the Harry Jerome Indoor Games last week in Richmond.
The 17-year-old collected the open women’s category, well ahead of UBC’s Olivia Campbell at 1.60m, while re-affirming her hold as the No. 1-ranked junior in the nation.
A New Westminster Senior Secondary student-athlete, Schultz also placed second in open women’s 60m hurdles, with a finish time of 9.03 seconds, behind American Tiana Davis.
She led a strong New West Spartans and Vancouver Olympics team haul, which saw strong postings from teammates Cheryl Chow, a fifth place in 60m hurdles, and Anastas Eliopoulos’ gold in youth male in 60m hurdles and 60m dash. In midgets, the Spartans’ Diego Medrano racked up a silver in the 60m hurdles.
Joining Schultz among No. 1-ranked in Canada at their respective specialties are Eliopoulos, Thomas Nobbs, in the 3,000m, and Devan Wiebe in open women’s 800m.
At last week’s Van Ryswyk Indoor meet in Kamloops, the Spartans’ Chow and Medrano kicked off the season with big results.
Chow established a PB in the women’s 60m hurdles with a time of 9.79 seconds, then added a bronze in the triple jump with a leap of 9.77m.
Medrano, meanwhile, topped the competition in the boys youth category with a 400m run of 57.37 seconds. He followed that with a bronze in the 60m.
