Royals get set for upcoming season

Port Moody native joins Douglas College's women's volleyball squad this season

With classes back in session, Douglas College's upcoming season of women's volleyball is fast approaching, and this year coaches are adding a Team B.C. player to the roster.

Madison Burt, Port Moody native, will don a Royals' jersey this year, and coaches have high expectations for the young rookie.

"Maddy will bring a huge outside presence for us," said Kyra Ianonne, head coach of the women's volleyball team. "She's dynamic and has a heavy arm. She's a very exciting presence and will step right into a role as a key player. Maddy is definitely one to watch and I'm excited to work with this very strong recruiting class."

Burt played on Team B.C.'s u-16 team in the 2011 Western Elite Championships as well as various provincial finals with the Coquitlam Ducks and Fraser Valley club teams. The 5-11 hitter also played for her high school team at Heritage Woods Secondary School, which made a strong run for the provincial title in 2012.

"I'm looking forward to starting off my post-secondary career at Douglas, as I have heard great things about Kyra as well as the team, and I can't wait to begin a new season as a Royal," Burt said.

Head coache Ianonne took over as coach of the women's volleyball team last season. Since then she's been trying things a little differently, including training the girls on sand courts for the upcoming season.
