Royal City skips to senior provincials

Royal City Curling Club's Rick Pughe and Mel Steffin both won entry to the B.C. senior championships next month in Trail.

Royal City Curling Club's Rick Pughe and Mel Steffin both won entry to the B.C. senior championships next month in Trail.

Pughe, along with third John Zwarych, second Fred Cleutinx and lead Craig Lightbody, won the B event at the senior men's Region 11 Lower Mainland qualifying spiel in Gibsons on Sunday.

The Steffin rink, including third Christopher Wilcock, second Curtis Bogren and lead Pierre Gallant, earned the third and final bye into the provincials with a win in the C event.

Pughe dropped his opening match 8-5 to eventual A event winner Craig Lepine of Langley last Friday.

The Pughe rink then got it together in the B event, winning four straight games before edging Royal City clubmate Doug Meger 7-6 in an 11th end in the B final, earning a berth in the B.C.s.

Pughe scored 10 points in all four of his leadup wins in the B event, including a 10-3 win in five ends over Alan Roemer of Delta.

The Royal City skip started things off with a 10-5 win over Owen Hayward of Marpole in seven ends.

Pughe also had little difficulty besting Steffin in the B semifinal with a triple in the third and eighth ends to win 10-4.

The Steffin rink opened strongly, winning its first three games before losing to Lepine in a tight 8-7 A final that went to an extra end.

Steffin's march to the final began with a 12-5 romp over Bob Arksey of Abbotsford, followed by a 9-2 win over Meger in a quick six-ender.

Steffin advanced to the final with a 7-3 victory over Richard Brower of Peace Arch.

Pughe beat Steffin in the B event, sending the Royal City skip into the C bracket.

The Steffin rink then made another run to a final, beginning with a 9-4 win over Garth Moore of Golden Ears.

Next up was a narrow 5-4 victory over Ken Watson of Vancouver following a steal in the 10th end.

In the C final and trailing 3-2 after four ends, Steffin made short work of Brian Gessner of Vancouver. Steffin scored four in the fifth and then stole three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to advance with an 11-3 win.

The senior women's Coastal qualifier kicks off this weekend at the Howe Sound Curling Club in Squamish.

Carol McFadden and four-time provincial senior's champion Kathy Smiley are representing Royal City at the Coastal bonspiel.

The combined men's and women's B.C. senior championships will be held in Trail from Feb. 11-17.
