Royal City athletes cash in at Kootenay Games

Schmidt won a total of five individual and team medals, including a gold in the 4x25-metre freestyle relay.

Schmidt also won individual silver medals in the 60-to-64 men's 200m and free sprint. He took third in the 50m free and 4x50m mixed free relay.

Archer Phil Talbot took gold in the men's 60-to-64 target shoot, scoring 1,038 points in the recurve bow division without sight and with fingers.

Cyclist Pat DeHaan was runner-up in the 55-to-59 men's novice time trial.

Vicki and Chuck Condon of New West teamed up for a silver medal in the 60-to-64 mixed doubles in tennis.

Joanne Mick and Pat Upper of New Westminster finished third in women's 55-and-over ice curling.

New Westminster seniors also picked up silvers in team play.

Sharon Williams, Christine Gervais and Kathy McGuire were runners-up with the Heat in women's 55-to-61 slo-pitch.

Darlene Currie shared a silver medal with the Sparks in the women's 62-plus slo-pitch.

John Fairfax, Mike Jones and Eric Jones were members of the Gringo's silver-medal-winning 60-and-over men's hockey team.

John Harkness was a member of the fifth-place co-ed 55-andover dragon boat team.

Gabriella Moro was another big winner at the Games.

Moro, the current B.C. record holder in the women's 60-to-64 discus, won her specialty with a toss of 23.61 metres, while also earning a second gold medal in the shot put at the Games.

The Burnaby athlete also picked up a pair of silver medals in the women's javelin and hammer throw.

Brenda Hobbs, who competed in five women's 60-to-64 events, earned a third-place medal in the 5,000-metre power walk. Hobbs was also fourth in both the javelin and 10-kilometre road walk.

Edmonds senior Norm Lesage, 81, took gold in the men's 100 and 400m sprints.

Marilyn Aldworth won the 55-to-59 women's singles in tennis. She also teamed with Chris Morrey-Jones of Burnaby for a silver in the mixed doubles. Morrey-Jones was a bronze medalist in the 60-to-64 men's singles.

Barbara Davies placed first in the 60-to-64 competitive women's cycling time trial. Herman Bosman was a runner-up in the men's novice time trial.

Letty Gimenes won three medals in 65-to-69 competitive women's badminton.

Gimenes was second in the women's singles. She also teamed up with Pat Davision of Vancouver for the doubles gold and Bob Herar of Burnaby in the mixed final. Herar and North Vancouver's Michael Barnard were the gold medallists in the men's doubles.

Burnaby's Randy Gene placed third in the competitive men's 60-to-64 singles in badminton. He also picked up gold with Wing Lau of Vancouver in doubles.

Elspeth Creith won a pair of third-place medals in mixed and women's doubles play, with Lau and Ging Quan of Burnaby, respectively.

Phil Horton of Burnaby shared a pair of gold medals in the recreational 75-to-79 doubles. Horton teamed with Kelowna's Norma Kopp in the mixed doubles and Rolly Waechter of North Vancouver in the men's doubles.

Lower Mainland placed third with 237 total medals, including a Games-high 132 gold.
