The affiliation with Vancouver United paid immediate dividends for the former Sapperton Rovers.

The renamed Rovers United got three goals from the former summer league club players in a 3-2 victory over Delta United Hurricanes at Trillium Park in Vancouver last Saturday.

Rizal Ganief scored a pair of goals and set up the opening goal for Rovers United in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League premier division season opener for both clubs.

Bobby Jhutty opened the scoring for the New Westminster-based Rover in the 15th minute, flicking the ball over a Delta defender before volleying the ball into the back of the net.

Ganiel, who earned the VMSL player of the week honour, tallied two late goals, including a breakaway ball from Jhutty.

Ganiel also tied the match at 2-2 in the 75th minute on his own rebound after Rovers teammates Colin Phillips, Jason Pierotti and Jhutty set him up for a strike on goal that was brilliantly saved by Delta goalie Drew Smiley.

Rovers United take on Norvan Pacific at Queen's Park Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

In other VMSL action, Columbus FC was named team of the week following its 3-1 win over Croatia SC.

Defender Stefano Pannu, midfielder Kozo Manome and forward Steve DeBlasio, with assists on two of the Columbus goals, combined for the win.
