The New West Spartans set four meet records and won seven gold medals at the recent Van Ryswyk indoor track and field meet in Kamloops.
Fifteen-year-old Nina Schultz won four medals and set two records in field and track. Schultz won the triple jump with a record leap of 10.85 metres, while also setting a record time of 9.22 seconds in the 60-metre hurdles. She also won the long jump in 4.78m and the high jump with a 1.55 leap.
Mihailo Stefanovic, 17, was top of the podium in the 60m dash in 7.34 seconds, while also setting meet records with first-place finishes in the 60m hurdles in 8.51 seconds and in the triple jump, with a 12.8m leap.
Schultz and Stefanovic are both ranked first in the B.C. Track and Field system in their respective events.
Schultz, Stefanovic and Spartans clubmates Jemal Reta and Bodgen Pavel were selected by the Canadian Sport Institute's Integrated Performance Sport System 'Road to the Olympics' program.
Douglas College athletes also had a good showing with a gold, a silver and a bronze medal.
Travis Fraser placed first in the 1,500m in a meet record time of 4: 18.10. Fraser also finished second in the 3,000m, only two seconds behind the leader to claim the silver medal.
Last year, Fraser won silver at the Canadian national cross-country championships for the B.C. junior provincial team.
Also running from the Douglas College Running Club was Matthew Battocchio, with a bronze medal in the 800m.
