RuiLin Huang of Burnaby made it a clean sweep in her Canadian Colleges' Association women's badminton career.
The fifth-year senior from Douglas College won an unprecedented fifth consecutive national women's singles title in Barrie, Ont. on Saturday.
The fifth gold medal made Huang the first-ever five-time women's singles champion since the CCAA began keeping records in 1982.
Huang, who has also won five straight PacWest provincial titles and more than 200 wins in her career, swept her entire competition in straight sets, including a 21-12, 21-13 victory over Vancouver Island
University wild card Melissa Liew in the gold-medal final.
H u a n g ' s first national title came in 2009 in Etobicoke, Ont.
In the first game of the women's singles final, coach Al Mawani called a timeout with Huang trailing PacWest roommate 8-5.
"I asked her what was the matter and she said, 'I'm nervous. I have everything to lose and nothing to gain.' I said, you are the better player, relax and just go out and enjoy the moment."
Huang rallied to defeat Liew 2112 before also taking the second set 21-13 to win the match.
Dan Kai of Northern Alberta Institute of Technology also won his fifth men's singles national title at the championships in Barrie. However, Kai took time off in 2010 after two straight title wins in 2008 and '09.
Douglas also won gold in the men's doubles.
Wei Luo and freshman Nathan Choi teamed for their first doubles title together, besting PacWest wildcard Willis Kwee and Andy Wong of Kwantlen Polytechnic 21-11, 21-09 in the final. For Luo it was a third consecutive national men's double title with a different partner.
In 2011, Luo won his first doubles title for Douglas with teammate Darren Hong at the nationals. Last year, Luo teamed with Simon Wu to win a second straight Canadian crown.
Luo and Choi easily beat Jimin Jung and Ian Tang of Seneca College 21-6, 21-8 in the semifinals.
In the women's doubles, the Douglas College pair of Amy Leung and Charmagne Yeung had to settle for a silver medal following a three-set 21-15, 16-21, 21-16 loss in the championship final to the CCAA female player of the year Tracy Wong and Renee Yip of Humber College.
It was the fourth national medal for Yeung and second for Leung.
The PacWest team comprised of Langara and Douglas players won the team supremacy award for an eighth consecutive year.
The decisive round was a 3-2 win over the Alberta conference, with Douglas athletes scoring the three points to clinch the win.
In round-robin competition, Douglas players recorded 14 wins and just one loss.
