The Lower Mainland Baseball Association collected more than $6,500 in donations from its Mother's Day fundraising weekend benefiting cancer research.

All 16 league games featured pink wooden bats supplied by Merv Sandrel, owner of Ball Park Sports.

The Canadian Cancer Society provided a website, banners and pledge forms, while the 500-plus association players collected the donations.

Delta Community Television even telecast a game between the Burnaby Brewers and the South Delta Padres. The Padres wore a set of numbered pink jerseys donated by a mother of one of the South Delta players.

"The Canadian Cancer Society was extremely pleased with the collective response from the LMBA, while players and teams were impresed enough to indicate that this would become an annual event," said association commissioner Dan Taylor of Burnaby.
