Salmonbellies battle back in third period but lose in hard-fought game

The New Westminster Salmonbellies battled back to make a game of it during their long-awaited return to Queen’s Park Arena.

After a more than 1,000-day absence because of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the Senior A Salmonbellies took on the Burnaby Lakers at their 2022 season home opener at Queen’s Park Arena on June 2.

The Lakers took the game 13-11, after the Bellies battled back in the third period after trailing in the first two periods. The Salmonbellies were down 7-2 after the first period and 9-4 after the second.

With 3:19 left in the final period, the teams were tied 11-11. The Lakers scored with 0.56 seconds left on the clock and added an empty net goal in the dying seconds of the game.

The Bellies kicked off their 2022 season on the road, falling to the Victoria Shamrocks 14-10 on May 27 and beating the Nanaimo Timbermen 13-9 the following night. They currently sit in fourth spot in the seven-team Western Lacrosse Association.

The Bellies return to Queen’s Park Arena on Thursday, June 9 at 7 p.m. (take note of the earlier start time) against the Nanaimo Timbermen, before taking on the Lakers at Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby on Friday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m.
