Ontario betters B.C. in bantam final

Team B.C. was forced to play second fiddle to Ontario in the championship final at the bantam box lacrosse national championships in Winnipeg. B.C., including New Westminster runner Erik Maas, fell 9-1 to the Central Canadian powerhouse in the gold-medal final on Wednesday.

Ontario built up a 7-0 two-period lead before B.C. team scoring leader William Clayton of Ridge Meadows potted his 13th goal of the championships to start the third period.

The win was Ontario's sixth consecutive national bantam title. Iroquois Nation won the inaugural event in 2007.

Earlier in the competition, B.C. also lost 9-6 to Ontario, which finished with an unblemished 7-0 record, including a combined 102 goals for and just 11 against.

The West Coast boys advanced to the championship final following a 5-3 win over Iroquois Nation on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the two teams played two periods of overtime before B.C. prevailed 7-6 at 3:02 of the second extra time on William's unassisted gamewinner.

The win gave B.C. second place over Team Iroquois in the round-robin standing.

B.C. finished with a record of 6-2-0, including 86 goals for and 32 against.

William finished third in overall bantam scoring with 21 total points.

Ontario's Owen Lane led all scorers with 15 goals and 30 points, while teammate Alexander Simmons potted 14 goals and 10 assists.

Thomas Semple of Coquitlam was next in line for B.C. with 10 goals and 16 points. Maas was fifth in B.C. team scoring with eight goals and four helpers.

Iroquois knocked off Nova Scotia 11-1 to win the bronze medal.
