NWSS names sports award winners

Kamila Rogic-McLean and Jamie Wandell were named the Grade 12 female and male athetes of the year at New Westminster Secondary School last month.

Rogic-McLean beat out Jessica Goodwin and Ali Bonesky for the girls' award, while Anthony Baker and Sergiy Patoka made the boys' shortlist.

Gabby Napoleone and Michael Desjardins took the Grade 11 athlete of the year awards.

Rihanne Ferdinandi and Manisha Kandola were nominees in the girls' category. Femi Olundegun and Aaron Staradub were the Grade 11 nominees.

Junior athlete of the year honours went to Kelsey Lonergan and Jordan Chin.

Natasha Lazecki and Anna Tchikecieva made the Grade 10 girls' shortlist. Yahia Gamaa and Sylvester Aphia were the boys' nominees.

In the Grade 9 division, Amanda Zarchuk and Tommy Robertson took top honours.

Louisa Tsang and Veronika Gukova were also nominated, as well as James and Stewart Sommerfeld.

Bantam athletes Fiona Green and Kale Brock were named the top Grade 8 winners.

Katelen Bello, Isabela Salas, Alex Moe and Tony Wang also made their respective shortlists.

Rogic-McLean also won New West's career athlete award, edging out Bonesky, who took the sports auxiliary award, and Karina Mousakova.

Baker was named the boys' career athlete ahead of sports auxiliary award winner Mackenzie Stevens and Daniel Na.

Na earned the Russ Brisco sportsmanship award as the third highest career point-getter.

Large block winners at NWSS included Rogic-McLean, Bonesky and Stevens, Ariana Sider, Janelle Poljer So, Lonergan, Lazecki and Zarchuk.

Graduating with small blocks were: Adomat, Kris Aplas, Rocky Bowman, Brandon Braich, Grady Cahil, Dylan Fee, Steve Ferdinandi, Tye Foster, Conner Goodwin, Ian Henderson, Justin Luk, Eli McGloughlin, Drew Milikin, Zafar Mohamed, Brandon Ngyuen, Yannis Obdnidir, Patoka, Austin Sing, Dean Tamboline, Wandell, Jessica Goodwin, Stephanie Hutchinson, Haley Myers, Mitra Noroozi, Chelsea Pellerin and Sunny Virk.

Earning small blocks in their Grade 11 year were: Regan Eberding, Olundegun, Hasrit Sidhu, Aaron Staradub, Rihanne Ferdinandi and Jettie McGloughlin.

Chin, Jonathan He, Lazecki, Lonergan and Tchiekechieva won junior small blocks. Zarchuk earned a small block as a Grade 9.

Dean Tamboline was the winner of the Herman Dhillon award.

Nick Adomat earned the Sidoo scholarship.

Eisuke Ota and Jessica Goodwin won the physical education award.
