The New Westminster Hyacks got their junior girls’ basketball season off to a roaring start with a win at the Collingwood Lady Cavaliers tournament in West Vancouver.
New Westminster defeated 38-27 in the championship final. Player of the game Sarah Forgie led the winners with 15 points. Aly Fieber and Keja Davis chipped in with six points apiece, while Devin Strome had 10 rebounds.
Earlier in the day, the Hyacks beat host Collingwood 41-27 to advance to the final.
Forgie, who was later named to the tournament all-star team, led the junior Hyacks with 17 points.
On Friday, New West opened with a 48-23 win over Lord Byng. Davis earned player of the game honours, scoring 13 points for the Hyacks. They also beat Pemberton 64-20 behind Mia Obrovac's 20 points and Strome's 11 boards.
The Hyack juniors improved their early season record to 5-0. Next tournament test is at Rick Hansen Secondary in Abbotsford on Dec. 4 through 6.
