Lorenzo Smith and Jennifer Johnson headline a group of 13 Simon Fraser University athletes selected to the 2015 Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field academic all-conference team.
Among the 163 student-athletes who were awarded with the distinction, Smith was the conference leader, boasting the highest grade-point average among the 57 men and 106 women.
The junior middle distance runner retained a 4.21 GPA in biomedical physiology, while competing for the Clan. At the SFU Awards Gala in April, Smith received the athletic department Scholar Athlete Award as the top academic performer.
On the women's side, Johnson is a graduate student working on her Master’s Degree in international studies. Johnson overcame a series of injuries, including a broken pelvis and fibula, to finally achieve All-American honours in cross-country and indoor track and field this season. She will be competing at the 2015 NCAA Division II outdoor championships next week in Allendale, Michigan in the 5,000 metres, where she is ranked fourth in the country.
Johnson inspires her teammates with her work ethic and leadership, while also carrying a 3.89 GPA. Earlier this year, Johnson and teammate Cameron Proceviat received the SFU Terry Fox Awards for Inspiration. Burnaby's Proceviat was also named to the academic all-conference team. He has a 3.85 GPA in molecular biology.
To qualify for the all-academic teams student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.20, be in their second year of competition at their current institution, and must be a projected letter winner.
