Ariana Sider of New Westminster committed the Simon Fraser University women's basketball program atop Burnaby Mountain this fall.
"Ariana first caught my eye when she was very young," said Clan head coach Bruce Langford. "She was feisty, competitive and a go-to scorer as a Grade 9 on a senior team. Her shot has only gotten better since then. Our team needs a player who can ruffle a few feathers and she can do that. All high school players need to mature for our league and Ariana has the determination and high basketball IQ for a promising future."
Sider, a 5'7, guard, is a product of New Westminster Secondary School.
"I would say that I am a tenacious defender, who is quick and competitive with a high basketball IQ," said Sider. "I'm excited to be a part of a program with such an impressive tradition, and am eager to learn from a coaching staff that's committed to getting the best out of their players."
Last season, Sider averaged 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds per game.
"Heading into next season, I want to get stronger and continue to improve my perimeter and jump shooting. I hope that my competitive style of play will be an asset to the team," said Sider.
In 2012, Sider earned several all-star awards after being named to the Lower Mainland all-tournament team, earning a Top-10 tournament second team all-star selection and being named a Burnaby/New Westminster high school all-star.
Sider will study kinesiology at Simon Fraser.
"SFU has one of the best kinesiology programs in Canada and that's important to me. The campus is beautiful and from a basketball perspective, the team dynamic is strong, so I'm happy to be coming to Simon Fraser," finished Sider.
