Runner fourth at NAIA outdoor track nationals, Burnaby North Secondary grad Layla Balooch earned a Rowing Canada bursary; gymnast sixth in vault and uneven bars and high school girls needed for club basketball tour to Japan

New Westminster’s Tamara Harris placed fourth in the women’s 800 metres at the NAIA national outdoor track and field championships.

Harris, a sophomore, also helped the University of British Columbia women’s 4x800m team win gold in the relay.

Rower earns future athlete bursary

Burnaby North Secondary grad Layla Balooch was one of the inaugural recipients of a Rowing Canada future athlete bursary.

Balooch, who won the junior women’s single scull at the National Rowing Championships in only her first year of competitive rowing, was one of five winners of a $2,000 contribution to her continued participation in rowing while attending university.

The former high school volleyball star rows at the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club, while attending UBC.

Burnaby gymnast tops B.C. team

Burnaby gymnast Briannah Tsang placed 12th in the all-around at the Canadian senior women’s artistic gymnastics championships in Ottawa. Tsang placed sixth overall in both the vault and uneven bars, finishing as the top B.C. senior with a 51.250 overall score.

National team member Ellie Black of Nova Scotia won the all-around with a 56.575 total score.

Players wanted for Japan trip

The Fraser Delta Basketball Club is looking for at least two more players for its upcoming tour to Japan in August.

The team will play as many as nine games in Tokyo and Akita City from Aug. 14 to August 31.

Girls must be in grades 9 to 11.
