Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the CFL's Canadian player of the week for a ninth time this season after a 34-29 victory over the B.C. Lions in the West Division final at B.C. Place last Sunday.

The New Westminster resident rushed for 112 yards and caught two passes for another 42 yards in the win to earn his second consecutive Canadian player mention in the playoffs.

Earlier this season, Cornish established a new All-Canadian single-season rushing record with 1,457 yards, surpassing the great Edmonton Eskimo fullback Normie Kwong, who held the mark since 1956.

Cornish was also named the CFL offensive player of the week and the Canadian of the month on three occasions this season.

ALL-SECOND TEAM

Simon Fraser University junior Casey Chin was named to the Great Northwest Conference second all-star football team.

Chin, a New Westminster Secondary School grad, led the NCAA Division II conference in tackles with 98. He also had 11 forced fumbles for the Clan this season.

SCOUTED HIGHLY

B.C. Hockey League defenceman Bo Pellah of New Westminster was rated as a possible late-round draft pick by the NHL Central Scouting in its preliminary hockey rankings released on Tuesday.

The 6-1 Pellah was traded to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs earlier this season from the Langley Rivermen. Pellah committed to Penn State University on a hockey scholarship in 2014.

IN DOUBLE FIGURES

New Westminster Secondary grad Kia Van Laare scored 12 points to help lead the Simon Fraser University varsity women's basketball team to 74-52 victory over Dixie State College on Nov. 17.

SFU will play its first Division II home game as a full-fledged member of the NCAA on Friday against Cal State Stanislaus in the West Gym.

The Clan will also play Stanislaus again on Saturday. Game time for both matches is 7 p.m.
