The New Westminster Salmonbellies took a big first step towards earning a playoff spot in the Western Lacrosse Association following a 10-6 win over the Langley Thunder at Queen’s Park Arena last Thursday.

The win eliminated the Thunder from the post season and set up a winner-take-all matchup in Coquitlam in two days time.

The senior A ’Bellies outscored Langley in each of the three periods, including a 5-3 advantage in the middle frame.

Much of the scoring came from New West’s back end, including two goals by team sparkplug and second star Tyler Crompton and another pair from Jeff Cornwall.

Rookie runner Brendan Ranford also contributed a goal on transition in a three-point effort at home. Defender Kyle Ross also scored for the Salmonbellies.

Alexis Buque had a strong outing for the winners, stopping 35 shots.
