Raquel Tjernagel brought home a medal of every colour from the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Ste-Therese, Que. last weekend.
The New Westminster sprinter won the women’s 200 metres, beating Leya Buchanan, who represented The Speed Athletic Club from Ontario, by five-hundredths of a second.
Tjernagel, who trains with the New West Spartans, won the event in a time of 24.82. She also garnered a runner-up medal following a photo finish in the 100m sprint.
Tjernagel and eventual winner Sade McCreath of Etobicoke, Ont. were both clocked in 12.09, but on closer review Tjernagel was outstepped at the finish by three-one-thousandths of a second.
The Grade 11 New Westminster Secondary student also helped Team B.C. earn a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.
NWSS junior Nina Schultz also earned a spot on the podium at the junior nationals in the women’s high jump.
Schultz, who won the B.C. high school’s most outstanding female track athlete earlier this season, leaped 1.70m.
Dallyssa Huggins, competing unattached, won the event with a jump of 1.76m.
On the men’s side, New Westminster’s Mihailo Stefanovic and Bogdan Pavel shared a silver medal with Team B.C. in the 4x100m relay.
The two New West Spartan clubmates also made the final of the men’s 110m hurdles, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.
