Six New West Spartans athletes competed at the B.C. Jamboree Championships in Nanaimo last weekend with shinning results.
Diego Medrano started off the Spartans’ medal haul, winning the 100-metre hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.29. This time confirmed his position as one of the best national-ranking athletes in this event.
Medrano also achieved the B.C. provincial team standard for the National Legion track and field championships in St.Therese, Que. on Aug. 7 to 9.

The Burnaby South runner also took gold in 200m hurdles with another PB time of 25.82, while coming in second in the 100m with an 11.78 clocking.

New West Secondary grad Bogdan Pavel achieved a great time in the 110m hurdles, winning a silver medal with a PB 14.66, achieving the Pan-American Junior Team standard just one week later than the qualification period.
Nikola Milutinovic ran a very strong race in 110m hurdles, winning a bronze, while also coming sixth in 400m hurdles.
On the women’s side, Kimberly Ma, recovered fast after a hamstring problem and ran a great 100m hurdles with a time of 15.49, winning a silver medal.
Tamara Harris, after her European competition phase, closed her track season with a strong run in 400m hurdles, winning the silver with a 64.00 time.
Cheryl Chow did a great presentation at the provincial level. Chow won a bronze medal in the triple jump with a PB of 10.48 metres. She also achieved a huge PB in the 100m hurdles with a 15.43 fifth-place time.
The Spartans ended up the provincial championships with eight medals, including two gold, four silver and two bronze.
Eleven VOC athletes also competed at the provincial, bringing the total number of medals to the New West Athletics program to 17 medals - five gold, eight silver and four bronze.
The program also presently has two athletes at the World Youth track and field championships in Cali Colombia.
Jasper Schiedel is currently in third place in his 400m heat with a PB of 50.79 in the decathlon. The second day of decathlon is on July 16.
New Westminster’s Nina Schultz will be competing in the girls’ heptathlon on July 17 and 18, with world-level results hopefully in her future.
