The New Westminster All-Stars were nipped in the semifinal 9-8 by eventual champion Little Mountain at the 9/10 Little League provincial championships in Victoria last weekend.

Up 6-2 after three innings, New West again took the lead 8-6 following doubles by Trevor Tong and Caleb Wong in a tworun sixth.

Little Mountain came back in the eighth with a run-scoring infield hit with the bases loaded to break an 8-8 impasse.

"The play at the plate was close, but the call did not go our way," said New West's David Adamoski.

The District 1 rep went on to defeat host Layritiz 12-0 in the provincial final.

New West lost its opening game in a tight contest 10-7 to Little Mountain.

The first-time District 6 champs rebounded with a 13-5 win over Beacon Hill and a 12-3 win over Layritz.

New Westminster also defeated District 5 champ Forest Hills 9-8 in the final game of round-robin play.

The team's only other

loss was a narrow 2-0 decision to White Rock/South Surrey.

However, New Westminster's season is far from over.

The boys will be participating in a six-team, sevenday national invitational tournament in Val-d'Or, Que., later this month.

At the tournament, New West will face teams from the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, Jericho B.C. and host Val-d'Or.

The tournament final will be held on Aug. 3.
