New West had many top placements to start the summer

Niko Papakyriakopoulos was named to Whitecaps FC under13 residency soccer team and to Western Canada team to Danone Cup.

The Royal City Track Club won its first-ever girls' aggregate title at the Junior Olmpics meet.

Kevin Crowley was named to the NLL all-rookie team.

The Douglas College Royals made it to the Northwest community college regional women's softball playoffs for a first time.

The Douglas College baseball team also qualified for its first berth in regional playoffs in the Northwest region.

An under-14 Burnaby/New Westminster girls' basketball team placed third at the Basketball B.C. provincial zone championships.

June:

New Westminster Secondary School finished fifth overall at the B.C. high school track and field championships.

STM Knights track and field team placed sixth overall at the B.C. high school championships at Swangard Stadium.

Cricketer Jack Kyle passed away on June 21.

Burnaby Lake rowers won 10 medals at the Northwest masters' regional championships.

Manisha Kandola won the girls' high jump at the B.C. high school track and field championships. Natasha Lazecki and Raquel Tjernagel both won silver medals in long jump and 400 metres, respectively. Bogdan Pavel was third in the hurdles.

Doug Ross was a recipient of an Award of Merit from B.C. Soccer.

Michael Valiante scored a first-ever double in sports car racing, winning two Grand American series races on the same day.

New Westminster was well represented on boys' and girls' provincial box lacrosse teams for the commissioners' national bantam and peewee championships.

New Westminster's Bissett brothers, Matthew, Stephen and Brendan, helped Canada's junior national field hockey team to a three-game sweep in Mexico.

Spencer Knowles placed runner-up in a national motocross race in the season opener in Nanaimo.

Regan Eberding and Jeremy Wilson shared the NWSS Grade 12 boys' athlete of the year award. Manisha Kandola and Jettie McLaughlin were co-winners of the girls' award.

Trevor Sidhu won a gold medal with Canada's under-18 team at the World Ball Hockey championships.

The New West Jets moved up to Hockey 3 to win a spring league 3-on-3 championship title.
