It was a long but good day for the New Westminster senior girls Hyacks on Wednesday.

The squad launched its Bob Gair Classic at the Massey Gym with a pair of wins, advancing to the tourney final on Friday (1 p.m., Massey Gym).

They began the tourney with a strong 59-32 victory over Kitsilano, turning it on after taking a 20-13 lead into halftime.

New West had the upperhand early, cashing in the game's first 10 points and streaking to a 18-5 advantage before Kits closed the first half on a 7-2 run.

In the second half, the Hyacks caught fire and out-scored the visiting Blue Demons 39-19.

Setting the tone was Anja Tjernagel, who tallied 23 points, including 17 over the final 20 minutes. Senior guard Kanon Imachi and Komalpreet Dosanjh each chipped in eight points in support.

In the team's second game of the day, they edged Maple Ridge 67-52, with Tjernagel again leading the way with 17 points.

Imachi and Adit Biar contributed 11 points apiece.

Their opponent will be from the other pool, which saw ranked W.J. Mouat, Centennial and Khalsa clash for a final spot.
