New Westminster and Burnaby track and field athletes made some hay at last week’s Harry Jerome Indoor Games in Richmond.
A handful of medals were procured, led by golds for New Westminster's Michelle Dadson and the Burnaby Striders’ Alisa Dervina.
Dadson, who attends St. Thomas More Collegiate, topped the women’s open shotput with a distance of 11.91 metres.
Dervina collected the top mark in the nine-year-old girls’ 600m race, posting a time of 2:42.03.
She would also place second in the 9-10 girls division in the 60m dash, crossing the finish line in 11.10 seconds. She trailed only Victoria Cheung’s 9.67.
Picking up a silver in the under-18 women’s 60m race was Burnaby South’s Taya Batiste. A runner with the Vancouver Thunderbirds, Batiste fiished the event in 7.91 seconds, just behind Charity Obazughanmwen’s 7.87 time.
Grace Chalk and Adrianna Klassen, both of SFU, also delivered second-place results, with Chalk’s in the open women’s 1500m (4:57.45), and Klassen’s in the open women’s 600m (1:43.28).
Finishing third in the 12-year-old boys’ 600m was Drin Dervina, also with Burnaby Striders, with a time of 1:57.85.
Coming close to the podium were Jacob Billard, Emily Chilton, Erin Fortune, Jordan Jacobs and Graeme Roberts.
Billard, who trains with the Royal City Track and Field Club, placed fourth in the 11-year-old boys 60m race, with a time of 9.96 seconds.
Part of a healthy SFU contingent, Chilton finished fourth in the open women’s 1500m with a time of 5:00.02. Fortune placed fourth in the high jump (1.45m), Jacobs was fourth with her time in the open women’s 60m dash (8.20), while Roberts placed fourth in the 1500 open men’s race (4:12.60).
