Lucky 'Cudas capture seven swim gold

Katrina Heinonen swam away a big winner at the B.C. Summer Swimming Association aquatic championships in Richmond this weekend.

The New Westminster swimmer garnered four gold medals in Division 6 girls' races, including a B.C. record in the 50-metre butterfly, for the Burnaby Barracudas.

Heinonen also won both the 100-metre fly, the 100m breaststroke and the 200m individual medley.

Div. 2 swimmer Octavia Lau also medalled in four races for the Barracudas. Lau won the girls' 50m freestyle, placed second in both the 100m free and 100m IM, while also finishing third in the 50m fly.

The Burnaby Barracudas won a total of 14 individual swim medals, including seven gold.

Other Barracuda winners included Div. 3 boy Xavier Lau and Div. 5 girl Kelly Pickthall.

Lau won the 100m free and took silver in the free sprint. Lau also placed fifth in the 100m IM.

Pickthall placed first in the 100m fly and second in the 200m IM. She was also fourth in the 100m free.

Randy Ho had a best second-place finish in the Div. 4 boys' 50m free. Ho also made finals in 100m back and free and 200m IM.

Gareth Jones placed third in the Div. 4 boys' 50m free and fourth in the 100m free.

The Barracudas also won five relay medals, including gold and silver in the Div. 3 and 4 boys' 200m free and medley, respectively.

The Div. 6 girls were runners-up in the medley relay.

Markus Wong and Rowan Cheung made it to three finals apiece. Wong had a best sixth-place finish in Div. 1 boys' free and IM. Cheung placed fifth in the Div. 3 boys' free and backstroke sprints.

Wilson Chieng, Garrett Yeo, Leo Shen, Emi Wong, Pheby Yeung and Amanda Haas also made individual divisional finals for the 'Cudas.

The Burnaby Mountain Mantas were winners of six top-three medals, including the club's only gold by Kenneth Ng in the Div. 4 boys' 100m breaststroke.

Vincent Chung was the Mantas only double medallist, winning a silver and a bronze in Div. 7 boys' 100 and 50m fly, respectively.

Hannah Cui placed in four Div. 1 girls' finals, winning a silver medal in the 50m fly.

D.J. Tsang also won a second-place medal in the boys' fly, while also placing fifth in the 100m free and IM.

Four-event finalist Bryan Yu was third in the Div. 3 boys' fly sprint, while garnering top-six placements in the back, breast and IM.

Harvey Lee and Bryan Cheung both made four separate finals in their respective divisions.

Lee had a fourth and fifth placing in Div. 3 fly and free, while Cheung was a best fifth in the Div. 5 boys' 100m free.

Jessica Liu also made a Div. 7 in the 100m fly for the Mantas.

The Mantas coaches raced home with a gold in the Div. 8 men's 200m free relay. The Div. 4 boys relay also medalled, finishing third in the 200m free.
