St. Thomas More Collegiate's Kevin Vigna finished runner-up at the Zone 4 junior golf championships this weekend.
Vigna, the first-round leader, shot a combined two-over-par 147 at the two-day event, which finished up at Quilchena Golf and Country Club on Sunday.
Vigna led STM schoolmate Alan Tolusso and a field of three other golfers by two strokes after the opening day of the Zone 4 junior golf championships.
Vigna shot a one-over-par 73 on the opening day of the two-day championship tournament at the Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club on June 13.
Tolusso, eventual winner Josh Zhang of Vancouver and North Vancouver's Dylan Hughes and Michael Kim were all tied for second place with three-over 75s after the first 18 holes.
Vigna's second-round, one-over 74 was not enough to hold off Zhang, who fired a two-under-par 71 to capture the championship title by a single stroke.
Tolusso, who topped the leaders in Zone 4 junior player of the year standings, was nipped for third spot by Vancouver's Roy Kang, who carded a final-round oneunder 71 to finish two shots back of the leader.
Tolusso finished with a combined score of 149.
In 10 zone junior events this season, Tolusso finished in the top four in six of them, including wins at Capilano and Squamish Valley and a runner-up on his home Vancouver club course.
He also came third at the Point Grey invitational.
"This year has been really awesome, to be honest," said Tolusso, whose next competition is the upcoming provincial junior championships in July.
"I feel like a contender. It's time to show what I have. I can't wait to get out there and do my best. My expectations are to win."
Burnaby's Alex Françis was seven shots off the pace following an opening round 80 and finished 10 shots back with a 155 after a two-over 75 at Quilchena.
In senior men's play, New Westminster's Paul Batchelor won the 36-hole Zone 4 championship with a five-over-par 148 total following the final stop at Seymour Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
Batchelor held a one-shot lead over over West Vancouver's David Miller with an opening-round one-over 72 held at Beach Grove on May 24.
John Gallacher of Burnaby finished in a tie for fifth place with a 153 total following an eight-over 80 on the final day.
Pemberton's Lance Lundy finished in second place overall one shot back at 149.
