The New Westminster Hyacks high school team is learning how to win in junior varsity football.
The JVs improved their AAA league record to 71, handing Vancouver College its first league loss following a 21-12 victory over the Vancouver independent school last week.
Adrian Cagampan, Jeff Lugtu and Julian Ramirez all scored touchdowns for the New Westminster squad that moved into a tie for first place with Van College in the western conference.
"They've been real good all season," said program head coach Farhan Lalji. "You have to learn how to win and this team shows up well. They are just so confident."
All three Hyack scores came on running plays.
Lugtu gave the home team a 13-7 lead with a touchdown on New Westminster's first possession of the third quarter.
Ramirez capped off the win in the final quarter, finishing off a long, time-consuming drive with a 12-yard run into the end zone.
New West's defensive line, manned by 6-4 Harper Sherman, Jonathan Tomalty, Sid Stevens and Grade 9 James Cunningham turned in solid performances against College.
The team's only loss to date was a 26-19 loss to Easter conference power Lord Tweedsmuir back in September.
New Westminster played West Vancouver in conference play on Thursday, after Record deadlines.
The JV Hyacks will finish up the regular season at home against the 2-2 Mt. Douglas Rams.
Kickoff for the game at Mercer Stadium is 3: 30 p.m.
