Hyacks win second spring camp

The New Westminster Hyacks high school football team defeated Rick Hansen 9-8 to win the MVP Hyack team camp at Mercer Stadium last Saturday.

The New Westminster Hyacks high school football team defeated Rick Hansen 9-8 to win the MVP Hyack team camp at Mercer Stadium last Saturday.

Quarterback Tommy Robertson found Stewart Sommerfeld for a 35yard touchdown pass in the final of the controlled scrimmage matchup. Matt Seymour also had an interception for the hosts.

Shelton, Washington placed third at the second annual team camp. Notre Dame placed fourth.

Lineman Bill Collins of New Westminster led the camp MVPs.

Also earning MVP recognition were Shelton line-back Brian Nault and fullback Gordon Henry.

Rick Hansen placed two players on the MVP list - defensive lineman Shaeem Charles Brown and receiver/defensive back Zack Taves.

Also earning MVP nods were lineman Cole White from Pitt Meadows, Notre Dame lineman Blake Pickard and Centennial's quarterback/defensive back Nick Okamoto.

The Hyacks will take part at the Great Northwest team camp held at Camp Rilea army reserve base in Warrenton, Oregon from July 4 to 8.

More than 50 varsity and junior varsity players from New Westminster are expected to take part in the annual exercise.
