The Royal City Hyacks Football club kicked off its preseason with a big win last weekend.

The junior bantam Hyacks won their division at the South Delta Lions Bowl with an undefeated record.

The 12-and 13-year-olds were led by MVP and top team tackler Jeff Lugtu. First-year player Nicholas Hauka also turned in a strong performance.

In the Peewee division, the Hyacks opened the tournament with a 6-6 tie against the defending provincial champs from Chilliwack.

Running back David Osho was unlucky not to score the game-winning touchdown when tackled on the one-yard line with no time left on the clock.

In the team's second game, the Hyacks beat Abbotsford White 18-0 on three touchdowns from Sammy Sidhu. The 10-and 11-year-olds lost to Abby Black, going down 6-0.

Identical twins Paul and Christian Roadilla were coMVP's for the orange and black, combining for numerous tackles and a fumble recovery. Defensive lineman Shaye Rathjen caused a key fumble, and linebacker Kinsale Philip added an interception. Phoenix Bourrier also added a pair of majors.

The Hyacks teams head to tournaments across the Lower Mainland for two more weeks, before opening the club's regular season Labour Day weekend.

The Hyacks also fielded two teams at an atom jamboree at Dennison Park in Tsawwassen.

Dante Baylis was named MVP after scoring the lone touchdown for the Hyacks in a 12-6 loss to Abbotsford.

Jareb Pineda almost scored a couple of touchdowns for the Hyacks before being brought down by last-second defenders.

The Royal City Hyacks are looking for new players in all divisions from flag football to bantams, ages five to 13. For more information, go to www.hyackfoot ball.com/rchfc.
