Meriam Ali had a monster weekend, leading the New Westminster Hyacks to fourth place at the Archbishop Carney senior girls' basketball tournament last weekend.
Ali averaged more than 26 points per game and was named a first team all-star following New West's 59-30 win over West Vancouver in the fourth-place matchup on Jan. 12.
Ali opened the tourney with a 23-point player-of-the-game effort in the Hyacks' 55-53 loss to Kitsilano.
The New West guard then had her first of back-to-back 28-point games in a 67-55 victory over Sa-Hali.
Player of the game Izabelle Datayan and Camille Sangalang contributed 15 and 16 points, respectively.
The Hyack boys were also busy last weekend, turning in a productive outing in an exhibition loss against Sir Charles Tupper at the East Side Story tournament.
Playing without high-scoring starter Sylvester Appiah, New West dropped a 99-97 thriller to the host school last Friday.
Inderjit Singh led the Hyacks with a huge double-double, scoring 28 points and hauling in 14 rebounds.
Guard Manvir Gandham knocked down 26 points, while Rick Maghera added 22 points, including six three-pointers.
"(Tupper) is a good team - credit due, it's given. It went down to the last second," said the 6-8 Singh.
The Hyacks raced out to a 30-20 lead after the opening 10 minutes, but Tupper's long bench and streaky shooting kept the lead in sight. Tupper finally took an 82-77 lead into the final period.
"We were ready, we just didn't put it down," Singh added.
The lead changed hands in the final three minutes. Singh knotted the contest 97-97 on a putback.
But with 38 ticks left on the clock, New West just couldn't find the bucket in a frenzy of activity under the basket.
A poor inbounds pass with 17 seconds left resulted in a turnover to Tupper.
The hosts made two-of-four free throws in the dying seconds to secure the victory.
Senior boys' regular sea-son play is scheduled for Monday and Wednesday nights.
