After a 3-1 exhibition record, the New Westminster Hyacks fell to Earth on Friday afternoon in Surrey, losing 48-7 to the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers.

The Panthers were led by quarterback Connor McKay who threw touchdown passes to Cody Faulkner and Taylor Anderson and rushed for another.

The Panthers staked out a 270 lead before James Nicolas got the Hyacks' only score, a 74-yard scamper.

But the Panthers then got an 81-yard kickoff return from Joe Carter to restore their lead and Tweedsmuir extended it to 41-7 at the half.

This season, the five Eastern Conference and the five Western Conference teams will each play against the four teams in their respective leagues, along with two crossover contests against the other side.

The Hyacks complete their crossover schedule this Friday night when they host Centennial at Mercer Stadium at 7: 30 p.m.

In other Hyacks news, the program held its 10th annual tailgate auction on Saturday night at the La Perla ballroom at the River Market.

The numbers are still being tallied up, but several big auction items were eagerly snapped up on a highly successful night.

The signed Roberto Luongo Team Canada Olympic jersey went for $1,000 on an advance bid from Dave Sidoo, while Dave Vallee was successful in bidding for the private dinner and wine soiree for 12 at Joey's Restaurant at Bentall Centre in Downtown Vancouver.

Norm Duncan was the high bidder for the wine auction, while Louise Perry of G&F Financial went home with an autographed Henrik Sedin jersey.

Realtor Mick McLennan will be going on a luxurious Victoria trip after being the high bidder for that auction item.
