Hyack girls third at Handsworth tourney

New Westminster placed third at the Handsworth juvenile high school girls' basketball tournament. The Grade 9 Hyacks won the consolation final 62-38 over the host North Vancouver school on Saturday.

Zoe Roberts led the New West girls with 15 points, while Madisen Obrovac helped out with 14 points.

Justice Steer and Tea Canton chipped in with nine and seven points, respectively.

Earlier in the day, New Westminster failed to advance to the championship following a narrow 41-38 defeat to W.J. Mouat in the tournament semifinal.

Obravac was the only Hyack in double figures with 10 points. Roberts, with nine points, and Katie Browning, with eight, also added to the scoreline.

The juvenile Hyacks led off with a 68-17 win over Rosedale on Friday.

Katie Bruyneel was the high scorer for the squad with 15 points.

Steer added 12 points and Roberts collected 10. Nina Lalic chipped in with nine points, while Obravac netted eight in limited action.

New Westminster currently leads the BurWest high school regular season with a 5-0 record.

The Hyacks conclude the regular season at Burnaby North today (Wednesday) after school. Tip off is at 3: 30 p.m.

Moscrop Secondary will host the Grade 9 girls' basketball playoffs, beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

The first-place and league runner-up teams will play the winners of the first-round of playoffs at Moscrop on Feb. 13.

The banner and consolation finals will also be played at Moscrop on Thursday, Feb. 14.

The top three teams will advance to the V&D championships.
