Track and field - the marquee coed sports event on the B.C. high school calender may be cancelled because of ongoing teacher job action in response to recent B.C. government legislation.
B.C. Secondary School's track and field commissioner Christine McNulty e-mailed the NOW, stating the organizers were still analyzing the situation and could not offer a comment at this time.
The provincial track and field championships are annually staged at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby in June.
B.C. School Sports issued a statement on April 20, outlining its commitment to go ahead with the planned spring season of sporting events.
But following a 73 per cent vote by the membership of the B.C. Teachers' Federation last weekend in favour of withdrawing its support for extracurricular sports, the Burnaby/New Westminster school district has since cancelled its participation in golf and boys' volleyball, while badminton is also still up in the air. Mountain biking was also cancelled.
Senior girls' soccer squeaked in an abbreviated season last Thursday with champion Burnaby North and runner-up Burnaby South both qualifying for the zone playdowns against North Vancouver, which is slated for a May 14 and 16 showdown according to North Shore's coordinator of athletics Gerry Karvelis.
High school boys' rugby is also prepared to see its season through to a provincial championship, which is scheduled to begin in Abbotsford on May 28.
