Hardball Royals fall in backdoor semifinals

Douglas College baseball team loses out to eventual finalist Mt. Hood at Northwest conference championships

The Douglas College Royals made it to the consolation semifinals at the Northwest conference baseball championships.

The Royals lost to Mt.Hood 9-2 in the backdoor playoff, scoring both runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Matt Yee and pinch-runner Jacob Robazza scored the runs for Douglas.

Jamie Whitehead took the loss for the Royals, allowing just three hits in seven innings and striking out five Mt. Hood batters.

The damage was done in the eighth inning when Mt. Hood scored six runs on four hits and five Douglas errors.

The Royals opened the eight-team championship tournament with a 7-0 loss to Treasure Valley.

Douglas responded with a 2-0 win over Everett to stay alive in the competition. Cory Duggan pitched a complete nine-inning shutout for the Royals, striking out nine batters while allowing just four hits.

Jeff Bouchard knocked in the game-winning run in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly to centre field. Bouchard also had a pair of hits in the win.

Garrett Belanger also had two hits for Douglas, including a run-scoring double in the eighth inning.

Mt. Hood advanced to the conference final against Lower Columbia with a 7-3 win over Tacoma.

Mt. Hood won 2-1 in the opening game of the championship before losing 6-1 to Lower Columbia in the double-knockout final.
