Sonu Kainth and Jordan Chin will be the next New Westminster Hyacks to play football at the collegiate level.

Kainth, a defensive lineman, has committed to the University of Manitoba, while Chin, a linebacker, will play at Concordia University.

Kainth, currently ranked No. 2 by topprospects.ca, was named a western conference all-star this season and was named the Hyacks most outstanding lineman. He finished fifth in the province with seven quarterback sacks, as well as 45 tackles.

"I picked the University of Manitoba because they had everything I was looking for in a university - a great football program, coaches, players and faculties," said Kainth. "They truly are the perfect fit for me academically and athletically."

Bison football head coach Brian Dobie was impressed with the initial films of the 6-6, 250-pound Hyack lineman.

"He had an immediate impact on our coaching staff with his speed and athleticism. His steady improvement over the last two years is a testament to his commitment and worth ethic while at New Westminster."

Hyack head coach Farhan Lalji believes the best is yet to come from the graduating senior.

"Sonu's improvement between grade 11 and 12 has been remarkable," said Lalji. "Sonu is just scratching the surface of how good he will be, and I believe the Manitoba program is the right place for him to develop."

Chin, the youngest member of a proud football-family, more than lived up to his lofty expectations, said Lalji. The 5-8, 190-lbs. linebacker finished sixth in the province with 63 tackles in nine games and added a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery this season.

Chin, a conference all-star and team MVP, also started on offense at guard, was a long snapper on specials teams as well as an outstanding leader as a team captain. Jordan will compete in both football and wrestling at Concordia.

"I chose the University of Concordia because they are offering me the best opportunity to continue with football while allowing me to pursue my education," said Chin. "Coach Pelland indicated I will . have the opportunity to fight for a position right from the beginning. They also have a well-known exercise science program and I also have family living in Quebec."

Stingers defensive coordinator, Luc Pelland believes the versatile Chin has a nose for football.

"His skills on special teams will greatly help him in his first year to fight for a roster spot, " said Pelland.

After seven years in the New Westminster football program, Chin is ready to take the next step, said Lalji.

"He has always played above his size, combining good athleticism with great football instincts and tremendous passion for the game," Lalji said.

Sonu and Jordan become the 23rd and 24th NWSS grads in the past 10 years to play college football.
