Grade 9 Hyacks place fourth at juvenile girls' provincials

New Westminster Secondary gave a good account of itself at the B.C. high school juvenile girls' provincial basketball championships at the Richmond Oval last week.

The Grade 9 Hyacks finished fourth overall following a 41-24 loss to Riverside in the consolation final on March 2.

Zoe Roberts was named New West's player of the game in the final, while Katie Browning and Madisen Obrovac had eight and six points, respectively, in the low-scoring affair.

In the semifinal, New West fell 49-30 to No. 2-seeded Immaculata. Obrovac led the way with 10 points. Roberts and Justice Steer had eight points apiece.

Player of the game Emma Forgie scored 10 points to lead the Hyacks to a 45-17 win over Sutherland in the provincial opener.

In the second round, Steer was named player of the game in New Westminster's 50-26 victory over Dr. Knox Middle School. Obrovac also hit double figures, with a 14point contribution.

Roberts and Siri Van Gruen had nine and seven points, respectively.

New West coach Doug Woodward said he has plans to coach the girls' team again next season.

"Our main goal next year is to win the junior B.C. provincial at the Langley Events Centre in Langley," he said.
