Golfer loses lead in final round

St. Thomas More Collegiate student Lucas Gatto was overtaken in the final round of last week's B.C. juvenile boys' golf championship in Powell River.

Gatto, who led for the first two rounds with a five-under-par 139 at the Myrtle Point Golf Club, finished up in a tie for second place following a final-round one-over 73.

Trevor Yu of Vancouver, 14, won the overall juvenile boys' title with three consecutive two-under rounds of 70 to take the championship by a pair of strokes.

Jordan Lu of Vancouver also posted a two-under 70 to tie Gatto with a 212 score.

Gatto, 16, opened with a tournament-best score of 68 on the 6,923-yard par-72 course.

Gatto's STM schoolmate Kevin Vigna finished in sixth place with a five-over-par 221.

Wyatt Racette of Burnaby placed 22nd with a 233 score. Kevin Li of Burnaby also made the cut to place 39th overall.

Alix Kong of West Vancouver ran away with the juvenile girls' title, firing an eight-under-par 211.

SIXTH AT GAMES

Simon Fraser University's Helen Crofts placed sixth in the women's 800 metres at the World Student Games in Shenzhen, China Aug. 18.

Crofts finished in a time of 2:04.40, well behind the personal-best 1:59.56 time of race winner Olha Zavhorodnya of the Ukraine. Crofts qualified seventh overall with a 2:02.98 clocking.

CRICKET IN 'PEG

Burnaby's Rohan Devraj was named to Canada's under-15 cricket team for the International Cricket Council's Americas tournament in Winnipeg, which began last weekend.

Canada is scheduled to play two games apiece against both Bermuda and the U.S.A.

HOMECOMING

New Westminster Hyacks alumni are all invited to this season's football homecoming at Mercer Stadium on Sept. 23.

All past players, coaches and managers, including those from the 1960s, '70s and '80s, are requested to attend the pre-game celebrations.

The Hyacks will take on Mount Boucherie High School from Kelowna at 7:30 p.m.

A pre-game alumni buffet will begin at 6:30 p.m.
