The Royal City u-15 Barcelona girls soccer team continued their winning ways with a couple of recent victories.

On Oct. 2, NW Barcelona beat the North Shore Renegades 2-1 at Mercer Stadium.

The Royal City girls opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a marker from Carly Cody, but North Shore equalized in the 46th minute. The winning tally came from Ally Fabian two minutes later, on an assist from Cody.

The New Westminster goals played with two silver call-ups, Piper Scott-Fiddler Alyssa Husband, and were down to 10 players after midfielder Rachel Hutchinson got injured.

The win comes a week after NW Barcelona beat the Burnaby Girls Blizzard 2-1.

New Westminster got goals from Celeste Bain, on a nifty pass from Montana Wegner and Cody, who scored the winner with less than two minutes left in the game.

MIXED RESULTS FOR HYACKS

In Royal City Hyacks community football action, it was a case of the good, bad and the ugly for games played on Oct. 9 at Ryall Park in Queensborough.

On the good side, the junior bantam Royal City Hyacks stayed undefeated after a 46-6 beating of the North Surrey Falcons.

Also on the good side was the five-toseven-year-old flag football team earning a 12-8 victory over the Coquitlam Packers.

On the bad side of the ledger, the Hyacks atom orange team suffered a heartbreaking 38-37 loss to the Vancouver Trojans that went down to the last play.

The Hyacks scored a touchdown to bring them to within one point, but the nine-yearolds were unable to punch in their convert attempt to tie the game.

Also bad was a slow start by the atom black Hyacks, who lost 20-14 to the Cloverdale Lions after being down 14-0 in the first quarter. Offensively, running back Reggie Waters led the way for the Hyacks, scoring both New Westminster touchdowns, including one on a kickoff return.

On the slightly ugly side was a 6-6 tie the peewees had against the Cloverdale Bobcats.

The 10-and 11-year-old Hyacks and the Bobcats, coached by B.C. Lions receiver Geroy Simon, played a scoreless first half before Kinsale Philip scored the Hyacks only touchdown early in the second half.

The Hyacks couldn't hold off the Bobcats, as the Surrey team tied the score. Neither team could get the winning points, but it was a moral victory for the Hyacks because they became the first team to deny Cloverdale a victory this season.

BADMINTON PLAYERS TOPS

Melody Liang and partner Jon Vandervet of the Shuttlesport/Douglas College Badminton Academy won the B.C. Open held during the Thanksgiving weekend at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club.

Liang and Vandervet beat number-1 seeds and number-19 world ranked Toby Ng and Grace Gao in three games.

Coach Al Mawani said his team got better as the tournament went on.

"This is the best this pair have played in the past six months," said Mawani. "They both really supported each other."

In other results, RuiLin Huang, in her comeback from injury, had an excellent tournament as she defeated the number-2 seed, Phyllis Chan, in the semifinals before losing to the number-1 seed, Michelle Lee, in the final.

"I feel with a couple more tournaments and few weeks of training, she will be much stronger and faster," said Mawani.
