A truly representative Burnaby/New Westminster girls' basketball team won a silver medal at the under-15 Basketball B.C. provincial zone championships in Langley.
The BurWest team, including Michell and Monique Sargent from Burnaby Mountain, Alix and Brooke Gabriel from Notre Dame, April Strand from Alpha, St. Thomas More's Gabrielle Laguerta and Zion Corrales Nelson, and Hannah DeVos and Lauren Denusik from New Westminster, placed second overall in the provincial final 47-30 to Langley/ Brookswood on May 20.
Laguerta and Corrales Nelson led the team with 10 and eight points, respectively, in the championship final. Following the competition, both girls were also picked for selection to the provincial under-15 teams.
BurWest defeated eventual bronze medallist Vancouver Island South 53-43 in the semifinals.
The local zone team defeated Vancouver East 34-26 in its opening game, before scoring a 52-35 victory over South Kamloops in the quarter-finals.
The provincial u-15 team selection camp takes place May 25 to 27.
