Junior long pole Matt MacGrotty helped Bryant University get to a program-first NCAA national Division I field lacrosse championship tournament last week.
Bryant wound up losing 12-7 to No. 1-ranked Syracuse University in the opening round of the nationals at the Carrier Dome in New York on Sunday.
"What this day meant, not only for Bryant lacrosse but Bryant University, just can't be put into words," said Bryant head coach Mike Pressler in a school press release. "But at the end of the day, we came here to win, and there is no moral victory here. It was about winning and advancing, and with the score 9-7 going into the fourth quarter, we were right where we wanted to be, and we just didn't make the plays to close out the game."
Sophomore standout and Northeast conference player of the year Kevin Massa won an NCAA single-season record 22-for-23 faceoffs for Bryant against Syracuse, while a pair of Bulldog teammates scored hat tricks in the program's first-ever NCAA Div. I tournament appearance.
MacGrotty, who started all 19 games for the Bulldogs this season, led the team with 29 forced turnovers this season. He also had 35 ground balls.
In the playoffs
New Westminster's Kyle Turris is hoping he can help the Ottawa Senators make it to Game 6 against the Pittsburgh Penquins in the second round of NHL playoffs.
Turris has scored two of his five playoff goals to date against the Pens in games 2 and 4, both losses.
He is currently tied for fourth place in playoff goal scoring and third among Sen's in team scoring behind captain Daniel Alfredson and defenseman Erik Karlsson.
In the playoffs, Turris is also a plus-1 and has a 54.5 efficiency percentage in the faceoff circle.
