Fetherstonhaugh, Hanger harvest golds at zones

New Westminster senior runner Grace Fetherstonhaugh tuned up for the provincials by claiming three events at last week's zone championships in Burnaby.

Grace Fetherstonhaugh and Kaitlyn Hanger played key roles in New Westminster Hyacks senior track and field team's rise to third overall in the aggregate tally at last week's zone championships in Burnaby.

The pair combined for five gold medals, putting New West just five points back of Burnaby Central in the overall senior standings. The strong team results also bodes well for Hyacks at next week's provincial championships in Langley.

Fetherstonhaugh, a Grade 12 who has committed to Oregon State on a track and field scholarship, scored gold in the 1500- and 3000-metre distances, as well as the 1500m steeplechase.

Hanger collected top marks in two diverse field competitions: she won the senior women's high jump and finished first in the hammer throw. She also placed fourth in the shotput.

Also picking up gold in the senior division were Grade 11 Nisa Reehal, who sprinted across the 400m girls finish line first, and added a silver in the 200m, and Balraj Khela, with the best distance in the senior boys shotput. He also added bronze in hammer throw.

On the junior side, Emma Dolman nailed a pair of first-place results, winning the 80m and 300m hurdles, with a bronze in the 200m. Lauryn Savela fired the javelin for gold in junior girls, while Joshua Lim did the same on junior boys competition.

* The Glenbrook Griffins exited the zones with the second-best score at the zone championships, trailing only R.A. McMath by seven points in the end tally.

Glenbrook, a middle school, was led by triple threat Monika Arcadi, who topped the Grade 8 800- and 1500-metre races, along with the high jump. Other multiple medal winners were Sophie Crowder, with gold in 3000m and bronze in 100m, and Hannah Milne, who won the 80m hurdles and finished second in the 200m hurdles.
