Second place just got a whole lot tighter following a pair of losses in PacWest women's basketball.
The Douglas College Royals held on to a share of second spot despite back-to-back losses to Quest and first-place Capilano universities last week.
Douglas dropped a 4948 decision to Quest in Squamish last Friday. The Royals then played the first-place Blues tough in the first half before bowing out 63-49 at Cap on Saturday.
"It was a great, intense battle. Cap just played better on their home court in the third quarter and down the stretch," said Douglas head coach Curtis Nelson.
The losses left the Royals in a tie with Vancouver Island University both with a 10-5 record. Quest is in fourth place just two points back, while Kwantlen is close behind at 8-7.
Amonda Francis and Taylor Carle shared a team-high 13 points against Capilano.
In Squamish, Francis scored a double-double, netting 14 points and 19 rebounds.
Poor free-throw shooting proved the undoing of the Royals against Quest. Douglas made good on just 11-of-23 attempts from the charity stripe.
Douglas will face Vancouver Island on Friday at the New Westminster campus. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
Camosun is in town on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
In men's volleyball, Douglas College moved into first place in Canadian Colleges' Athletic Association national polling this week.
Douglas moved up from second place to first following 3-0 road wins over College of the Rockies last week.
Former national No. 1 Red Deer College fell to third place following a weekend split against third-place Medicine Hat College last weekend.
