Douglas men win PacWest title, earn trip to nationals

Douglas College soccer teams won gold in the men's final and bronze in the women's at the PacWest provincial soccer championships in Squamish this weekend

The Douglas College Royals won the PacWest provincial college men's soccer final in a shootout over Vancouver Island University.

Douglas outscored the regular season champion 4-3 on penalty kicks in the shootout at Quest University on Sunday.

Nicolas Pineda Graham got the eventual winners on board first, finishing off a successful first-half penalty kick.

Vancouver Island got that goal back in the second half, when PacWest player of the year Victor Blasco converted a penalty kick to send the game into extra time after Royals' goalkeeper Marc Mincieli took down Renan Rebelatto in the box.

Nothing was decided in extra time.

The Royals had to go to overtime in their 2-0 semifinal win over host Quest on Saturday.

Douglas broke the scoreless regulation time matchup with goal early in the opening extra time.

Royals' Jagpreet Purewal tallied the game-winning goal off a one-on-one effort. Douglas put the game away with a late deflection.

The semifinal win guaranteed Douglas a berth at the Canadian Colleges' national championships to be held in Ontario Nov. 5 to 8.

Prior to the games, Royals Mark Baldisimo, Spencer Deboice and Devin Phelan were named to the PacWest men's conference all-star team.

Marni McMillan of Douglas was named the PacWest women's player of the year. McMillan joined Royals teammates Danae Harding and Nicolle Fraser on the All-PacWest team.

The Royal women earned a bronze medal at the provincials following a 4-3 shootout win over Kwantlen Polytechnic on Saturday.

The league runner-up Royals were upset 2-1 in the semifinals by the No. 3 Langara Falcons.
