The Douglas College Royals posted three wins at the recent Christmas women's basketball tournament in Washington state at Skagit Valley.

The Royals beat three quality opponents in three days, including a 60-42 win over Edmonds Community College.

Douglas followed that win with a 64-63 victory off of a sideline inbounds play with 2.3 seconds left in the semi-final with host Skagit. The Royals ran a back screen misdirection lob to Amonda Francis, who hit the game-winner at the buzzer.

The Royals then won the final 47-44 over an excellent Bellevue team to take first place overall.

Fifth-year guard Patti Olsen and rookie Taylor Carle were named tournament all-stars, while Francis was selected the tournament MVP.

In PacWest league play against Langara last Friday, Douglas brought a balanced effort to contribute to a 54-40 win over the Falcons.

Douglas jumped out to a 13-0 lead against Langara, powered by second-year guard Lauren Sollero, who scored eight of our first 13 points, including a pair of three-point shots and a layup to break their full court press.

Rookie Taylor Carle, who played excellent perimeter guard defense, and 6-1 Kenny Whitney played huge roles to a strong start with steals, blocked shots, rebounds and scoring.

Francis and 6-0 rookie guard Chloe Kennedy were a tough matchup offensively and defensively for the smaller Langara roster.
