Eight players from Delta formed the core of a 19-man Fraser River roster that took home gold in box lacrosse in Nanaimo at the BC Summer Games last weekend (July 17-20).

Fraser River-Delta (Zone 4)–comprised of players from Delta, New Westminster, Burnaby, and Richmond–swept their pool with three convincing wins over their opponents. They earned a 14-2 drubbing of Cariboo North East, a 9-2 victory over Vancouver-Squamish, before securing a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Vancouver Island.

Goaltending duties were split evenly between Justin Smith of Delta and Cameron Overby of Richmond with both performing admirably. In the Gold Medal game they faced perennial favourites Fraser Valley but proved more than equal to the task.

At the end of the first period they were up 2-1 on goals from Tavin Grant and Riley Duimel. In the second frame Duimel added another and Dawson Trimble and Mackenzie Burns each contributed one for a 5-1 score at the end of two periods. The favourites fought back but the Fraser River-Delta’s defence held strong for the win and a final score of 5-4.

Coaches Trevor Smith and Andrew Walters, both from Delta, are extremely proud of their team and the excellent level of teamwork and play. Delta players: Jared Beaton, Riley Duimel, Taylor Goundry, Evan Khara, Brayden Kirk, Justin Smith and Ryan Walters.
