Coasters pip Pioneers at B.C. masters

The Burnaby Coasters won two separate divisions, including the A and grand masters groups, at the B.C. masters lacrosse championships in Burnaby last weekend. Future Hall of Famer Russ Heard had a big part in both wins against rival Ladner Pioneers.

Heard collected six points to pace the Coasters to a 12-7 win in the A championship final. Rick Rawson led Burnaby with four goals.

In the over-45 grand masters final, it was Heard again, along with Wayne Baker, who scored the gamewinning goals in the shootout after Burnaby and Ladner played to a 6-6 tie in regulation time. Okanagan grand masters won the bronze.

In other gold-medal action, the Nanaimo Timbermen defeated the Port Coquitlam Saints 6-5 in a shootout in the B final.

The North Shore Cowboys easily took the C division final with a 155 win over the Surrey Firefighters. Calgary won the bronze.
