Three first-half goals gave Simon Fraser University men's soccer team a win in its opening Great Northwest conference match of the season Sunday.

The varsity Clan blanked Western Washington University 4-0 at Terry Fox Field to post its fifth consecutive victory without a loss this season.

Jovan Blagojevic counted the game-winning strike with his second goal of the season in the 16th minute of play, firing a shot off a corner kick into the back of the net from outside the 18-yard box.

Later in the opening half, Lucas Ferritto added his second of the year off his own rebound. Six minutes later, Farhad Abdulgani found John Hodnett, who knocked home his third of the season to make the score 3-0.

"I am very happy with the positive start to conference play," said SFU head coach Alan Koch in a school press release.

In the second half, SFU keeper Sheldon Steenhuis was lucky to keep his shutout hopes alive, when a Kallan Brown shot rang off the post in the opening minute of the period.

The Clan added a late goal in the 82nd minute, when Joseph Martin tallied off a pass from Romany Doutkevich. Abdulgani also drew an assist on Martin's fourth goal of the year.

Steenhuis was called on to make six saves to earn the shutout for the Clan.

Senior defender Anthony DiNicolo was named a coGreat Northwest Athletic Conference player of the week on Sept. 15.
