A big 30-point effort from captain Kirk Bothwell garnered the New West senior boys Hyacks basketball team its first win of 2020, topping Moscrop 95-69 on Monday.
Up 22-14 at one quarter and 40-27 at halftime, the Hyacks had to fend off a little rally by the Panthers but ended up claiming their second league win in three attempts.
Bothwell also hauled in 12 rebounds, while Kevin Guillermo counted 16 points and Bradie Traverse knocked down 13 – nine from long distance. Quentin Leberg posted a game-high 14 boards.
It was a refreshing change of pace after a tough slog through the field at the Sir Winston Churchill tournament last week.
New West came close on a couple of occasions but dropped all three contests, starting with a 66-62 defeat at the hands of Eric Hamber. They were also topped 91-78 by Richmond, with Traverse tallying a team-best 18 points, and fell 75-68 to Point Grey.

Against Hamber, Traverse scored a team-high 22 points with nine boards, while Leberg netted 17 points and 18 rebounds.

Traverse would again top the scoring in the loss to Richmond, tallying 18 points. Contributing 17 points and 10 boards was Leberg, while Udhay Mangat cashing in for 15 points.
Luke Dixon scored a team-best 19 points and added 10 boardsagainst Point Grey, while Guillermo tallied 16 points.

Looking to amp up their experience even more, 4-A unranked New West was slated to compete at this weekend's Victoria Police tournament, meeting 2-A Pacific Christian in the opener today (Thursday).
