The Vancouver Cannons open their Fall Ball Baseball School this year on August 31 at Queen's Park Stadium.

The Cannons play in the Premier Baseball League and their fall ball program is for players 13 to 18 years of age who live in Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond.

Dave Empey, the Cannons head coach, has put 14 players into professional baseball. Three of them have reached the major leagues, including Chicago Cubs ace Ryan Dempster, who recently signed a $52 million contract.

"We had a very young PBL team this past season," says Empey, who has also helped more than 70 players receive college baseball scholarships. "We're building our program and we welcome any new players who want to learn and do the work to be the best they can be."

Seven coaches will be on hand for the baseball school, including strength and conditioning expert Graeme Lehman and sprint trainer Lorne Berkun. Assistant coaches include Josh Hundal and Rob Favero.

The Cannons Fall Ball Baseball School runs for six weeks with practices, plus more than 30 games, including two tournaments in Blaine, Washington and a doubleheader at Joe Martin Stadium, the pro park in Bellingham.

Cost for the six weeks is $225, including a Cannons hat and a T-shirt. The opening sessions run Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and 2 at Queen's Park Stadium, starting at 5 p.m. There will also be practices at Robert Burnaby Park in Burnaby.
